Isn't this the same as LegalZoom and others?
Most DIY tools just copy and paste what you enter into an online form into placeholders on a static legal document that will only work in some situations and courthouses. Many of their users end up hiring an attorney. Compass uses complex logic to create the right documents. It also makes it easy to get legal help with your documents without formal representation.
How much does it cost?
You can create an account and use Compass to track deadlines, upload files, and purchase legal assistance for free. Some wizards like divorce filings, service of process, and some negotiations wizards are also free. Other wizards will charge a fee to get the auto-generated documents. We also strongly recommend using Compass in combination with help from an attorney available for purchase in Compass.
Shouldn't I just hire a lawyer?
It depends on what you can afford, how much money is in dispute, whether you trust lawyers, and how confident you feel with a self-service approach. Many clients tell us they did better without a lawyer, because the lawyer was often not available. Others do terribly until they hire an attorney to help.
Can my ex and I both use Compass together to collaborate on settlement?
No. The bar association's conflict of interest rules prohibit attorney King from providing legal advice to both parties. Please avoid creating an account if your ex already has one.
