How This Calculator Works

This calculator uses the post-separation support formula developed by the Chatham and Orange county courthouses:

Alimony = ((Breadwinner Income - Breadwinner CS) - (Dependent Income - Dependent CS)) × 0.3025 - (Dependent Income × 0.03)

  • The "breadwinner" is the spouse the household relied on to provide financially during the marriage
  • Child support obligations are subtracted from income before calculation
  • The gap in income is multiplied by 30.25%, then 3% of the dependent's income is subtracted
  • This formula is for informational purposes only. It is intended to be a short-hand estimate and is not how alimony is actually calculated by law.
